Q. What trainings am I required to take?
A. As a leader, you are required to take
  1. Orientation before meeting with your troop.
  2. Leadership Essentials within the first three months of starting a troop.
  3. Overnight Adventures before you can go on any overnight trips.

Your troop must also have a
  1. Certified first aider to go on all trips with you. CPR and First Aid classes are available through GSCSNJ. While it is suggested that all leaders are certified, you can designate a registered volunteering parent to be your first aider as well.

  2. Certified troop camper to accompany you on any camping trips. A registered adult within your troop must have successfully completed Outdoor Skills I & II before your troop can go on a camping trip.

Note: The Troop Camper and First Aider cannot be the same person. While multiple people in attendance can have both trainings, the troop cannot rely on a single person to be both certified troop camper and certified first aider at the same time.

  3. Trained Cookie Manager to manage your Cookie Sales each year. This can be a registered volunteer parent or a leader.

All Service Unit Team members are required to take the appropriate Service Unit Level trainings within three months of being elected to that position. Some Service Unit positions require yearly update trainings, such as Service Unit Cookie Manager, Service Unit QSP Manager, Registrar, etc.

Q. What if I already took New Leader training and a BLT2/Transition training for my level before this Leadership Essentials class was even available? Do I have to take any more trainings?
A. If you already have Orientation and New Leader training you have fulfilled all required trainings. If you feel you need more information on future levels, or on the Journeys programs then it is suggested that you take Leadership Essentials or Continuing the Excellence as it will cover all levels of scouting.

Also, GSCSNJ will be scheduling a series of 1 hour workshops specific to each level to help bring leaders up to speed on what's new with that level. Look for these new workshops on the GSCSNJ calendar.

Q. What if I took my trainings several years ago? Are they still good?
A. If you took Orientation and or New Leader training more than 5 years ago, it is suggested you take them again as there have been so many changes.

If you were previously a leader in GSCSNJ but had a lapse in membership of two years or more, then you are required to re-take Orientation and Leadership Essentials before becoming a leader in EWAGS.

Q. What if I was a leader in a different Council, do my trainings still count?
A. Policies differ dramatically from Council to Council so yes, you will be required to follow all steps to becoming a new leader, including taking Orientation and Leadership Essentials.

Q. How do I register for trainings?
A. You can find all upcoming trainings on the GSCSNJ calendar. Simply click on the training name to view the details, and register for it by clicking on "Register on E-Council (Click here)". The trainings take place all over the state, so it's best to find one that is close and convenient for you. The name of the town is listed in the parentheses next to the name of the training, for example "Orientation (Robbinsville)". Also, there are some abbreviations for the different Council Service Centers, they are as follows:
  • EBSC - East Brunswick Service Center
  • CHSC - Cherry Hill Service Center
  • NSC - Newfield Service Center

Q. I can't make any of the trainings listed on the GSCSNJ website, what should I do?
A. Local trainings can be individually planned for smaller groups of leaders that cannot make it to GSCSNJ trainings. To arrange for a local training, please contact the Service Unit Director and they can arrange for a local training to be given. A minimum number of leaders may be necessary in order to arrange for a local training.

Q. I know I took my training, but I keep getting told there is no record of it, what should I do?
A. If you've taken training at GSCSNJ after November 2006 and registered for your training online, records of your trainings will be e-Council and your consultant can contact Council to get verification that you have taken the training.

If GSCSNJ does not have record of your training, you will need to provide a copy of your green card to your consultant so that your records can be updated to reflect your training date(s).

If GSCSNJ does not have your records and you no longer have your green card, there is very little that can be done to verify your training. If this is the case, you may want to consider retaking the training.

Q. Why do I (or my Cookie/QSP Manager) have to keep retaking Cookie Manager and QSP training every year?
A. Every year Council makes changes to the fundraising processes to help streamline them for participating troops. The themes change, the recognitions change, and sometimes entire processes change. These yearly trainings are mandatory for any troop who wishes to participate in fundraisers.
